Whether you buy them at the supermarket or are lucky enough to have a tree in your backyard, this time of year Feijoas are plentiful. Enjoy them as they are or make use of the abundance and create a delicious Feijoa Chutney with this recipe from 5+ A Day Charitable Trust.
This chutney is the perfect combination of sweet and sour with the mixture of feijoas, dates, raisins and a variety of different spices. Serve with cheese and crackers or fresh bread for a great addition to your next platter. This recipe has a serving of three litres, so divide it up into jars for a nice gift for family and friends.
Feijoas also have many health benefits as they are a source of fibre which aids digestion and a good source of Vitamin C to help boost immunity and fight fatigue. What a bonus!
Serves: Makes 3 litres
Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 1½ - 2 hours
1kg feijoas
500g onions
300g raisins
500g dates (pitted)
1 cinnamon stick
500g brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
4 teaspoon salt
4 cups malt vinegar
Wash the feijoas and finely slice them.
Chop the onions finely and roughly chop the raisins and dates.
Mix all ingredients in a large saucepan, bring to the boil and cook slowly for 1 1½ - 2 hours, until the chutney is thick.
Stir the chutney often so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the saucepan. Remove from heat and remove the cinnamon stick.
Allow to cool and then spoon into hot, clean jars and seal.
